- Tall Sage is the state flower of Nevada and grows up to 7 feet tall. It has broad ecological tolerance and can survive a wide range of environmental conditions. Tall Sagebrush has evolved a number of adaptations designed to increase the efficiency of water absorption and retention under the semi-arid conditions in which it thrives. The plants produce two types of leaves: the primary lobed leaves persist throughout the year whereas the smaller, softer non-lobed leaves appear along the branch tips in early winter and drop off during drought conditions the following summer. This allows more rapid growth during the relatively moist conditions of early spring and enables the plant to conserve resources during the hot, dry summer. Tall sagebrush also has an efficient dual-component root system. Small widely dispersed shallow roots absorb water rapidly before it can evaporate following rainstorms. Its deep roots draw water from reservoirs deep underground.
There are approximately 24 native willows in this region ranging from prostrate and dwarf shrubs to small trees. Individual species can be highly variable and hybridization is common. Their leaves are typically long and narrow with smooth edges but can also be nearly round and sometimes with finely toothed edges; they vary from hairless to being covered in densely silky hairs and sometimes have a whitish cast or bloom. Willows have tiny flowers borne in catkins with the male and female catkins on separate plants. The flowers develop pointed capsules that split open to release the many tiny seeds, each with a tuft of cottony hairs.
The leaves of Oregon Grape are a holly-like ground cover and usually have seven to nine leaflets in pairs along a thin, tough stem. They are rough-textured, wavy-margined with prickly edges, and darker green above than below. Some of the evergreen leaves turn red in the autumn. The blossoms are tight yellow clusters and bloom in early spring. Both the stems and roots have a bright yellow pith and very bitter taste due to the presence of the alkaloid berberine. The flowers mature into tart bluish berries with a white “bloom.” Fruit matures in early summer.
American Pennyroyal is a square-stemmed plant rarely growing more than a foot tall. It has small dark green leaves arranged oppositely and straight unbranching 6" stems radiating from the roots. During early summer the tips of the stems are covered with lavender or purple flower puffs. This perennial often has dead stems and flower puffs intermingled with the live growth. The scent of the plant is very aromatic, resembling a cross between citrus and camphor. Pennyroyal likes dry arroyos and hillsides from 3,000 to 7,500 feet elevation.
