- St. John's Wort is a widespread perennial and reproduces by short runners as well as seeds. The stems are between 1 to 2 1⁄2 feet high, erect, and have numerous rust colored branches. The oblong leaves are covered with transparent dots, up to one inch long, and arranged oppositely along the stem. The numerous bright yellow flowers are 3⁄4 inch in diameter flat-topped clusters. Each flower consists of 5 separate petals. The numerous stamens are arranged in groups of three.
Catnip is a common perennial herb widely cultivated in Britain and the United States; it has naturalized throughout both countries. A member of the mint family, it bears the characteristic square-shaped erect stems. Its hairy branching stems grow from three to five feet tall. The oblong or cordate pointed leaves have scalloped edges and grayish hairs on the underside. The flowers are white with purple spots and grow in spikes from June to September. The leaves and flowering tops are collected between June and September.
Hyssop is an aromatic perennial in mint family. Originally from Mediterranean it is now cultivated worldwide. Its tube-like blue-purple flowers bloom during summer and it can grow to 2 feet tall.
Chamomile is a well known and widely used plant. The delicate fragrant flowers have many tiny white petals with large yellow centers.
Elephant Head Betony is a showy flowering plant in the broomrape family. The erect plant can grow to a height of 80 centimeters. Its sharply-toothed fernlike leaves are located low on the stout stem. The stem is topped with a large inflorescence of bright pink to purple or white flowers. Each flower has a long, pointed beak which curves upward, superficially resembling the trunk of an elephant, and the lateral lobes of the flower resemble an elephant's ears. Like other lousewort and related broomrape genera, this is a root parasite which obtains nutrients from the roots of other plants by piercing them with haustoria. This plant is found in the high mountain ranges of western North America, particularly the Cascades and High Sierra. It grows in wet environments such as riverbanks and blooms in mid to late spring.Spearmint: Essential oils, B vitamins, Vitamin C, potassium, flavonoids, tannins.
