- This valuable medicinal tree is native to the Pacific Coast of North America and a few temperate areas of old growth forests on the west side of the Rocky Mountain range. The small shrub or tree stands six to eighteen feet tall. The leaves are dark green and oblong with prominent veins. The small flowers are greenish-white and found in small clusters. Round black berries follow the flowers. Cascara can be found in relatively moist low-lying forested habitats from British Columbia to California and east to Montana. The bark is stripped from the branches of this tree in the early spring or late autumn and left to age for at least one year.
Years ago there was a "harvesting frenzy" of Cascara Sagrada resulting in serious damage to the remaining stands throughout the Northwest. The branches of this tree are brittle and easily broken. Broken branches due to winter storms can usually be found in the spring. In bear country there is usually a supply of broken limbs during autumn as bears break the limbs climbing for the tree's sweet dark berries. Since Cascara Sagrada bark must be aged for a year, recycling broken limbs minimizes harvest impacts and can save time on "aging" as well.

Cautions
- Never use fresh bark. It must be aged for at least one year before use to reduce its cramping effect.
Do not use Cascara in cases of intestinal obstruction, acute intestinal inflammation, ulcerative colitis, IBS, colitis, hemorrhoids, appendicitis, or abdominal pain of unknown origin. Excessive use can cause nausea and vomiting. Cascara should not be used continuously for more than 1-2 weeks. It recommended to avoid concomitant use of Cascara with other oral drugs, laxatives, corticosteroids, potassium depleting diuretics, or cardiac glycosides such as digoxin.
