- Mullein is a biennial that produces a large thick rosette of furry leaves the first year and a single stout erect stem, 3 to 6 feet tall, the following year. The leaves are alternate, overlapping one another, light green, and densely woolly. Bright yellow flowers grow singly in the long second year spike. Each flower has five petals and averages 1⁄4" to 1⁄2” in diameter. Thousands of minute seeds follow in autumn and provide a valuable food source for wintering birds. Mullein is common along river bottoms, in pastures, meadows, fence rows and waste areas, and prefers gravel-like soil.
Cleavers have a single square stem with bristly edges and frequently form mats over taller plants. The foliage develops regular whorls along the stem forming circular rosettes of six to eight leaves. Their tiny white flowers are star-shaped.
Horehound is a perennial plant growing from a short knobby root. Its woolly stems are square and often reach up to 2 feet tall. The crinkled fuzzy leaves grow oppositely along the stem with each pair of leaves at right angles to the ones below. The tiny white flowers form balls below the paired leaves. The seed heads mature into sticking burrs and the plant has a sharp acrid scent when crushed. Horehound can be found growing wild throughout Europe, the United States, and Canada. The herb prefers dry sandy places, wastelands, vacant lots, and abandoned fields.
