- This woodland orchid of the old growth forest has a sheathed leafless stock and small grayish yellow to dull purple flowers with purplish-red spots. The shape of the flowers are orchid-like having a single spotted lower lip, two side spurs, two upper petals, and an upright spur behind the blossom. Blooms appear from May through June. The plant usually grows in colonies and seldom reaches 10 inches tall. Tiny seeds are borne in loose capsules of drooping fruit. Rhizomes resemble chunks of coral. The root has very little scent, if any. Dig one in six plants. If gathering for tincture use the entire flowering plant (or seed pods). Rinse the roots carefully and chop finely.
