- There are approximately 24 native willows in this region ranging from prostrate and dwarf shrubs to small trees. Individual species can be highly variable and hybridization is common. Their leaves are typically long and narrow with smooth edges but can also be nearly round and sometimes with finely toothed edges; they vary from hairless to being covered in densely silky hairs and sometimes have a whitish cast or bloom. Willows have tiny flowers borne in catkins with the male and female catkins on separate plants. The flowers develop pointed capsules that split open to release the many tiny seeds, each with a tuft of cottony hairs.
Willow Bark helps reduce pain and swelling.
Fireweed is often abundant in wet open fields, pastures, and particularly burned-over lands; the name Fireweed derives from the species' abundance on burned sites after forest fires. The reddish stems of this herbaceous perennial are usually simple, erect, smooth, and 1 1⁄2 to 8 feet tall with scattered alternate leaves. The leaves of fireweed are unique in that the leaf veins are circular and do not terminate on the edges of the leaf, instead forming circular loops and joining together inside the outer leaf margins. This feature makes the plants very easy to identify in all stages of growth. The leaves are lanceolate and pinnately veined. The symmetrical flowers have four magenta to pink petals, 2 to 3 cm in diameter. The styles have four stigmas which occur in symmetrical terminal racemes. The reddish-brown linear seed capsule splits from the apex and bears many minute brown seeds (about 300 to 400 per capsule and 80,000 per plant). The seeds have silky hairs to aid wind dispersal and are very easily spread by the wind, often becoming a weed and a dominant species on disturbed ground. Fireweed occurs throughout the US except in the southeastern states and Texas. It is found in all of the Canadian provinces. It also occurs throughout Eurasia and is the national flower of Russia. Also known as Great Willow Herb.
Fireweed soothes many types of inflammations such as bites, swelling, bruising.
Tall Sage is the state flower of Nevada and grows up to 7 feet tall. It has broad ecological tolerance and can survive a wide range of environmental conditions. Tall Sagebrush has evolved a number of adaptations designed to increase the efficiency of water absorption and retention under the semi-arid conditions in which it thrives. The plants produce two types of leaves: the primary lobed leaves persist throughout the year whereas the smaller, softer non-lobed leaves appear along the branch tips in early winter and drop off during drought conditions the following summer. This allows more rapid growth during the relatively moist conditions of early spring and enables the plant to conserve resources during the hot, dry summer. Tall sagebrush also has an efficient dual-component root system. Small widely dispersed shallow roots absorb water rapidly before it can evaporate following rainstorms. Its deep roots draw water from reservoirs deep underground.
Tall Sagebrush Soothes irritation and also has antimicrobial properties to keep wounds clean.
The pungently scented Yarrow has finely divided fern-like leaves and a flat-topped cluster of many small white flowers. The species grows in a diversity of habitats and flowers from June through September. The densely hairy plants average between ten and twenty inches tall with leaves one to four inches long.
Yarrow contains several pain-relieving constituents and is very effective in the treatment of wounds.
