- True firs have tiny pockets of resin, or balsam, that occur in their bark. There are about 40 species of true fir growing in the northern hemisphere. True fir grow well in snowy environments because of pointed tops and short stiff branches which enable them to resist breakage due to heavy snow accumulation. There are 7 species of true fir native to western North America: Grand Fir, Pacific Silver Fir, Noble Fir, California Red Fir, Subalpine Fir, and White fir. Bristlecone fir, the seventh, is less common. The cones are erect and perch at the top of the branches. Most needles are around 1” long and blunt. When removed they leave a circular scar on the branch. The needles are highly aromatic.
Fresh Plant Hydrosol Extract initiated within 36 hours of harvest.
Hydrosols are a product of steam distillation. Pure deep well water and wild plant materials are heated in a chamber for many hours. The steam rises and condenses in copper pipes. The resulting waters contain a small amount of water soluble plant constituents and fragrant volatile essential oils.
