- Goldthread is a low growing perennial. From its very thin bright yellow rhizomes grows 3 shiny and leathery fan-shaped, sharp-toothed leaflets. A single small, white, star-shaped flower is borne at the ends of the flowering stalks, appearing from April to August. The 5 to 7 sepals of the calyx are white and resemble petals. The 5 to 7 petals of the corolla are smaller, club shaped, and yellow at the base. The stalked seed pods are compressed and oblong, and contain small black seeds. Goldthread grows in scattered colonies at low to mid elevations in moist mossy old growth forests. Goldthread is rich in Berberine.
