- Black Walnut is a hardwood tree found in temperate climates and growing up to 100 feet tall. Its bark is rough and dark and the leaves are pinnately compound with lance-shaped serrated leaflets. Male and female flowers grow in separate catkins (the males are the ones hanging in long rows). The fruit is a deeply grooved, hard to crack nut inside of a spherical rind. Fresh Black Walnut Hulls are harvested in their green state (before they blacken) when they are more potent.
