- Mullein is a biennial that produces a large thick rosette of furry leaves the first year and a single stout erect stem, 3 to 6 feet tall, the following year. The leaves are alternate, overlapping one another, light green, and densely woolly. Bright yellow flowers grow singly in the long second year spike. Each flower has five petals and averages 1⁄4" to 1⁄2” in diameter. Thousands of minute seeds follow in autumn and provide a valuable food source for wintering birds. Mullein is common along river bottoms, in pastures, meadows, fence rows and waste areas, and prefers gravel-like soil.
St. John's Wort is a widespread perennial and reproduces by short runners as well as seeds. The stems are between 1 to 2 1⁄2 feet high, erect, and have numerous rust colored branches. The oblong leaves are covered with transparent dots, up to one inch long, and arranged oppositely along the stem. The numerous bright yellow flowers are 3⁄4 inch in diameter flat-topped clusters. Each flower consists of 5 separate petals. The numerous stamens are arranged in groups of three.
Gypsy Flower is a biennial to short-lived perennial plant in the Borage family that flowers from May through July. This soft hairy plant forms a low growing rosette of leaves in its first year and then bolts in the second year to form a plant 1 to 3 feet tall. The reddish-purple flowers originating on the upper part of the stem produce four nutlets (seeds) each. These grayish-brown seeds are rounded-triangular in shape and are covered with short hooked prickles which easily attach to passing animals.
The pungently scented Yarrow has finely divided fern-like leaves and a flat-topped cluster of many small white flowers. The species grows in a diversity of habitats and flowers from June through September. The densely hairy plants average between ten and twenty inches tall with leaves one to four inches long.
