Red Belted Polypore is an attractive, varnished, orangish-red to brownish shelf fungus found on dead conifers. The perennial fruiting body is initially knob-like, forming a hard, rounded or hoof-shaped bracket. The thick; upper surface is at first yellowish-brown to orange-brown and varnished. The margin is banded reddish to orange-brown, with a blunt, white edge. The lower surface is minutely pored, white, and bruises pale yellow to buff. The flesh is woody, yellowish-brown over multiple layers of tubes; the pores of fresh specimens frequently exuding droplets of clear liquid.
Artist's Conk is a wide flat perennial polypore found growing on many hardwood species and also on conifers. Able to live 50 years or more, it is widely distributed in woodlands throughout the world. While it may prefer old-growth Douglas Fir trees, it can often be found on Birch, Poplar, and Spruce as well. The white underside stains brown when fresh and because of this it has often been used for painting and sketching.
Turkey Tail is a shelf-like bracket fungus that is thin, tough, and leathery when fresh, becoming rigid to slightly flexible when dry. Caps are generally 2-7” broad and tongue-shaped becoming fan-shaped, or growing in circular rosettes. Growing margin may be planar or wavy and is often white or creamy-colored. The upper surface is dry with velvety hairy zones usually alternating with silky-smooth ones. They come in a wide spectrum of colors but are predominantly shades of white, brown, and orange with occasional lines of green, blue, and maroon. These colors form very beautiful rainbow-like segments resembling a spread out turkey tail growing singularly or in overlapping groups on dead trees. The white to dingy yellow underside has thousands of tiny (3-5 per mm) but visible tubes that do not discolor when scratched. A stalk is absent or rudimentary and spores are white or yellowish. The scent of this mushroom is pleasant, smoothly sweet, and distinctly polypore-ish..
Oregon Reishi is typically found on dead conifers. This cold-loving polypore is uncommon because Reishi species typically prefer warmer climates and are found less frequently in temperate regions. It is related to the more well-known Reishi Ganoderma lucidum which is sometimes called the "panacea polypore" with more than 300 bio-active compounds having been detected in its fruiting bodies!
False Tinder is a saprophytic and parasitic polypore with hoof-shaped caps having a pale to dark brown undersurface. This hard and woody mushroom can be found growing solitary or in groups on living or dead trunks of various hardwood tree species, especially birch, maple and poplar. Traditionally used in Europe and North America as tinder to start fires and as absorbent "pads" to stop external bleeding as well as a wide variety of other healing applications. Violet Tooth Polypore are small, delicate polypores that resemble Turkey Tail. They are variegated on the top with whites, greens, browns and as the name states, the underside has tiny teeth that are tinged with violet.
