- Catnip is a common perennial herb widely cultivated in Britain and the United States; it has naturalized throughout both countries. A member of the mint family, it bears the characteristic square-shaped erect stems. Its hairy branching stems grow from three to five feet tall. The oblong or cordate pointed leaves have scalloped edges and grayish hairs on the underside. The flowers are white with purple spots and grow in spikes from June to September. The leaves and flowering tops are collected between June and September.
Hyssop is an aromatic perennial in mint family. Originally from Mediterranean it is now cultivated worldwide. Its tube-like blue-purple flowers bloom during summer and it can grow to 2 feet tall.
River Mint is native to Australia and grows along the rivers and in other moist areas.
Horehound is a perennial plant growing from a short knobby root. Its woolly stems are square and often reach up to 2 feet tall. The crinkled fuzzy leaves grow oppositely along the stem with each pair of leaves at right angles to the ones below. The tiny white flowers form balls below the paired leaves. The seed heads mature into sticking burrs and the plant has a sharp acrid scent when crushed. Horehound can be found growing wild throughout Europe, the United States, and Canada. The herb prefers dry sandy places, wastelands, vacant lots, and abandoned fields.
Peppermint and Spearmint are common mints cultivated in many herb gardens. They are hardy and readily self seed.
