- Valerian is a perennial growing with upright stems from 1 to 3 feet in height. There are one or more sets of opposite leaves along the stem with each group separate from the next. The succulent above ground growth is green and forms newly each year. The flower umbels appear at the end of the stems in colors ranging from light pink to white. The roots have a distinctive scent.
Brown's Peony is closely related to the buttercup family. This plant has large, heavy, bronzed-colored succulent flowers that are three to four inches across and hang from the ends of long stems. Several large divided leaves grow alternately on the stem. The leaflets are covered with a waxy coat. The fleshy finger-like roots have an earthy scent. This is the only peony native to North America. It is found growing in sagebrush steppes.
There are approximately 24 native willows in this region ranging from prostrate and dwarf shrubs to small trees. Individual species can be highly variable and hybridization is common. Their leaves are typically long and narrow with smooth edges but can also be nearly round and sometimes with finely toothed edges; they vary from hairless to being covered in densely silky hairs and sometimes have a whitish cast or bloom. Willows have tiny flowers borne in catkins with the male and female catkins on separate plants. The flowers develop pointed capsules that split open to release the many tiny seeds, each with a tuft of cottony hairs.
